Malpractice Insurance

Malpractice insurance is one of the most important services offered in our society. Once patients starting suing doctors that they felt gave them inadequate treatment, doctors were put in a position of extreme fear where they could not properly perform their job as the threat of being sued was too great. It was not until malpractice insurance was widely issued that this problem was solved. I am not saying that with malpractice insurance doctors can treat people however they want. Almost every doctor that you will encounter will sincerely want to see their patients return to good health. However, to do this can sometimes involve high risk procedures. Despite the risks this may entail, it is often the best course of action for the patient. If doctors did not have malpractice insurance to cover the worst case scenarios, they would almost certainly be not be willing to try these procedures, even if it is the best course of action for their patient.

Recently, the premiums required of doctors for their malpractice insurance has been growing rapidly. The reason for the increase in price of malpractice insurance is that there are an increasing number of large claims and settlements. In order to the providers of malpractice insurance to remain profitable, they have had to bump up their premiums. This is definitely a better solution than having malpractice insurance providers go bankrupt, but the increasing cost to doctors could result in another situation where doctors are too afraid of being sued to properly perform their jobs. Malpractice insurance is necessary to allow doctors to operate properly, as is the right of patients to receive compensation for improper treatment. However, these checks must be used in a way that allows for the systems to run smoothly, not in a way that disrupts the system.
